Facebook Video to MP3 — Audio Extraction Guide

By Sardar Ali Khan · Last updated 2026-05-05

Quick answer.Facebook video uses H.264 + AAC inside MP4. Most public posts and reels can be converted to MP3 in seconds — copy the share link, paste into a converter. Private posts, login-walled content, and in-progress live streams won't work.

Get the right Facebook URL

Facebook video URLs come in three common shapes:

  • Share shortlink: facebook.com/share/r/AbCd... — what the Share button generates. Most reliable for converters.
  • Reel permalink: facebook.com/reel/1234567890 — direct vertical-video URL.
  • Watch URL: facebook.com/watch?v=1234567890 — older long-form video format.

If a converter rejects one shape, try another. The share/r/ shortlink works most consistently because it's the URL Facebook officially exposes for outside-platform sharing.

Mobile (Facebook app)

  1. Open the video.
  2. Tap Share → Copy link.
  3. Paste into the converter.

Desktop browser

  1. Right-click the video → Show video URL (Chrome/Firefox) or copy from address bar.
  2. Paste into the converter.

Convert with our tool

Use our Facebook converter. Paste the URL, choose MP3, pick bitrate (192 kbps is the sweet spot — Facebook's source audio caps at ~128 kbps AAC, so 320 doesn't add audible quality), download.

Why some videos require login

Facebook serves different page content depending on whether the request is logged in:

  • Public posts — anyone can view; converters work.
  • Friends-only posts — visible to your friend list; an anonymous converter request gets a login wall.
  • Group posts — depends on the group's visibility settings.
  • Page posts — usually public; convert normally.

For login-walled content, the realistic path is yt-dlp with cookies passed from a logged-in browser session.

Quality limits — why Facebook MP3s aren't studio

Facebook's video pipeline caps audio at roughly 128 kbps AAC. For reels, sometimes lower. The video itself is highly compressed; audio quality reflects the same constraints. If the source already had audible compression, your MP3 inherits it.

See our bitrate guide for what actually changes between bitrates.

Reels vs videos vs live

  • Reels: Short vertical videos. Convert fine when public; share/r/ shortlinks are the most reliable input form.
  • Long-form videos: The original /watch/ URL format. Some are uploaded by Pages and are public; others are personal posts with friend-only visibility.
  • Live broadcasts (in progress): Cannot be downloaded. The HLS stream is an evolving target.
  • Live recordings (after end): Once Facebook saves the broadcast as a regular video, that has a permalink and can be converted like any other video.

Preserving uploader attribution

Most converters embed the page/uploader name in the MP3's ID3 artist field automatically. Verify in iTunes/Music app or a tag editor. If it's missing, add it manually — important for organizing a library where multiple Facebook sources appear.

What doesn't work

  • Private posts visible only to friends.
  • Group posts where you're not a member.
  • Live broadcasts in progress.
  • Watch parties (curated stream sessions).
  • Stories (24-hour ephemeral content).
  • Most paid/exclusive content.
  • Videos that have been deleted from Facebook's CDN.

Mobile workflow

  1. Tap Share → Copy link in the Facebook app.
  2. Switch to Safari or Chrome.
  3. Paste into our converter.
  4. Download. File lands in Files app (iPhone) or Downloads folder (Android).

Is converting Facebook video legal?

Same legal framework as other platforms. Personal use is low-risk; commercial repurposing is a copyright issue. Note that Meta's Terms of Service forbid downloading content without their authorization — separate from US copyright law. See our legal hub for the framework that applies broadly across platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Facebook URL fail in the converter?

Three common causes: (1) the post is private or visible only to friends — Meta serves the page differently to anonymous requests; (2) the URL is a profile share rather than the actual video permalink; (3) the converter doesn't support Facebook reels yet. Try the share/r/ shortlink that Facebook generates from the Share button.

Can I download Facebook Live videos as MP3?

Only after the broadcast ends and Facebook archives a saved replay. Live streams in progress can't be downloaded. Once archived, the saved video has its own permalink that converters accept.

What audio quality does Facebook serve?

Typically 128 kbps AAC for short videos and reels. Higher-bitrate audio is rare. Re-encoding to 320 kbps MP3 doesn't add quality back — the source caps below that.

Are reels different from regular videos?

Reels are vertical short-form videos with their own URL pattern (facebook.com/reel/). Most modern converters handle them, but the share/r/ shortlink form sometimes works better than the canonical reel URL.

Can I download from a private Facebook group?

Only if the converter supports cookie-based auth and you provide your logged-in session. Most public web converters don't. yt-dlp with --cookies-from-browser is the realistic path.
